2004

In 2004, the Lehab Association for Premature Infants in Israel was founded and this is how things looked then:

Maternity leave of 12 weeks, with no possibility of extension with assistance from the state

Life-saving RSV vaccines against the "premature virus" can only be purchased privately, at a cost of thousands of NIS for a monthly vaccine dose and up to tens of thousands of NIS per season depending on the month of birth (and what if you had twins or triplets?...)

Prematurity allowance from National Insurance - does not exist

Premature babies whose mothers cannot express milk and who consume formula in the early weeks are 10 times more exposed to intestinal necrosis (NEC)

There is no mandatory indication for continuing the care of the premature baby in the community after release from the premature baby

2022

And today - 2022 - the Lehab association celebrates 18 years since its founding and many important achievements that help premature babies and their families. Here are just some of them:

Option to extend the maternity leave from 15 days to 140 days beyond the usual 15 weeks, depending on the number of days of hospitalization in the preterm (more than two weeks of hospitalization)

Full subsidy of RSV vaccines for any premature born up to week 34+6, as well as the possibility to submit an application to the Exceptions Committee if necessary

Automatic prematurity allowance from National Insurance for any prematurity born up to week 32+6 or up to a weight of 1,750 grams. The allowance includes a monetary amount, discounts on property tax payments, water and health insurance in addition to tax credit points for a working parent. Allowances for additional beneficiaries as well.

Since 2020, there has been a national breast milk bank in MDA that provides breast milk safe for use to any premature baby born before week 32 or weighing less than 1,500 grams whose mother cannot provide him with breast milk, in order to minimize the NEC disease

The Ministry of Health's circular, called the Community Prematurity Circular, and written with the help of the association's volunteers, defines a clear indication for the care of premature babies in the community after release from the community

At the conference, we met the representatives from all the piggies, and distributed flyers, octopuses, books "Finally a brother who can be hugged" and also the book donated by Hanoch Daum to each piggie.

Visiting preschools and lectures:

Part of our activity is to go to the field, guide and make our unique knowledge accessible to teams in preemies, milk drop nurses and parents.
We managed to get to the early stages this month: Ha'emek, Assuta, Ein Kerem...
and deliver lectures on empathy for parents of premature babies, assistance to families in the community, and also on the activities of the association, the services we provide and their accessibility to parents.
